The Cape York region
comprises Cape York Peninsula and is situated in Far
North Qld 2
670 km n-w of Brisbane. Cape York
sits at the peninsula’s tip, is the northernmost
point on the Australian mainland and was named by
Capt Cook to honour the Duke of York. The Peninsula
covers about 137 000 sq km and its population is made
up mostly of Aborigines and
Torres Strait Islanders. New Guinea sits 140 km
(north), Gulf of Carpentaria (west) and Coral Sea
(east). Important towns are Cooktown, Weipa, Bamaga & Laura and
main industries include tourism (May-Nov), mining,
cattle & fishing. There are numerous national
parks in the region.
